Gear test: Hartblei Pentacon Six-Canon EOS Tilt adaptor Oct 21

Adaptors to use other 35mm lenses on Canon EOS cameras have been around for a while now: the m42 ones being very popular thanks to the low price of many m42 mount lenses.
The Hartlei adaptors for Pentacon Six that allow you to tilt or shift (but not both on the same adaptor). That’s possible thanks to the larger lens flange distance of medium format cameras over 35mm cameras. And, the Pentacon Six mount lenses are quite inexpensive, much like m42 glass.
So: it means that perspective control lenses that are oh so fashionable of late are now in the budget range of the amateur and the lower end professional.
And, in my tests it seems to work pretty well. The build quality is fantastic, and it attaches securely to both to your Canon and your P6 lens.
It allows you to not only tilt 8 degrees, but also rotate the lens 360 degrees, so you can control how the tilt influences the shot.
There are a few downsides. The rotation is a little stepped, which means super fine adjustments in the rotation need some handwork. I haven’t found this to be a big deal.
The other is that it can get a bit stuck on P6 lens side of things. This means that the lens isn’t likely to fall off, but a few times I’ve needed the help of some leverage to get the adaptor off a lens to get it onto another.
The other downside isn’t the fault of the adaptor, but rather the weight of P6 glass. They’re designed for medium format, so, they aren’t particularly well balenced for 35mm SLRs, and, they take up a whole lot of space (& weight) in my camera bag.
On the whole however, it’s a solidly built product that offers tilt effects in camera on pretty decent glass at an extremely affordable price. I picked mine up on eBay, but you can also buy direct from the manufacturer in the Ukraine.
